Throw Stones in Water

Objective

Through this activity, the children experience, explore and experiment with natural phenomena and physical laws. You get the opportunity to teach children that large stones make bigger movements in water than small stones. Throwing is also practised in the activity.

Instructions

  1. Let the children stand at the edge of the water to throw small and large stones in the water. Talk to the children about what they are doing and what they can see.
They will experience that large stones produce large splashes and waves, and small stones produce small rings in the water. They will also experience that the small stones are easier to throw a long way.

Tips

  • Let the children drop a large stone in a bucket of water to see how much splashes over. Then let them do the same with a small stone. Get the children to reflect over the difference.
  • Remember to keep a good distance between the children when they throw stones, as not all children can calculate when to the release the stone in a throwing movement.
